DPRK U23 dismantle Iran in Asian Games group clash
DPRK U23 produced a comprehensive victory over Iran U23 in their third Group Stage fixture at the Asian Games, winning 4-1 on 23 September 2026. The result overturns what had been a promising start for the hosts, who sat top of the table with four points from two matches. By then the game had already swung beyond recovery after Iran's early lead.
A. Hosseinzadeh gave Iran the initiative in the 17th minute, and the hosts looked comfortable for a spell. But DPRK responded with an aggressive approach, rotating their side with substitutions at 22 and 38 minutes. Choe Kuk levelled in the 41st before M. Ra struck twice, first in the 44th and again in the 51st, to put the visitors ahead. Paek Chung-Song added a fourth in the 68th to make it unassailable.
The statistics tell a story of control. DPRK registered 114 attacks against Iran's 88, and held 57 per cent possession to 43. They recorded nine shots on target with eight off target, while Iran managed only four on target and one off. The hosts had zero blocked shots — not that it mattered when the scoreline read 4-1. Two yellow cards for Iran, including one to M. Dehghan just before half-time, showed their frustration mounting.
Iran's squad adjustments came late. A. Hosseinzadeh, their goalscorer, was withdrawn in the 53rd alongside Y. Mazrae. M. Dehghan came off in the 82nd after picking up his booking, and A. Razzaghinia also saw action from the bench. For DPRK, Choe Kuk was substituted in the 84th, replaced by Yom Chol-gyong.
The standings shift is immediate. Iran drop from first to second place with five points from three games, while DPRK move to second with four points, though they carry a negative goal difference. Three matches remain in the group stage, and both sides now face a more difficult path to qualification.
