Al Bukayriyah

Al-Bukayriyah's players spent the 2022-23 season in the Saudi Second Division and finished it in the First Division, the second tier of the Saudi league. The step up came 60 years after the club was set up in a town in the Qassim province.

The nickname is older than either name. King Fahd bin Abdulaziz took part in the club's founding in 1962. The white and purple of the shirts have stayed with it.

Home is a ground that carries the club's own name and holds 3,000. That number matters more in the First Division than it did a division below: a promoted side draws bigger away supports, and the ground's capacity now sits well under what the fixtures bring. It opened in the late 1980s, which makes it younger than the club by a quarter of a century — for its first decades Al-Amal had no permanent home of its own.

There is no trophy in the cabinet. Everything the club has to show for six decades is the promotion, which is why the 2022-23 season is the reference point for anyone talking about Al-Bukayriyah rather than a line on a longer list.

The one name that runs through all of it is the king's. Fahd's involvement at the founding is what gave the club its nickname, and it is the detail people in the town reach for first when they explain why a side from a place this size has that particular title attached to it.
