Alcione

The Stadio Ernesto Breda sits in Sesto San Giovanni and holds 3,523 — a ground that fits Serie C rather than a city of nearly a million and a half. Alcione moved there for the 2024-25 season, arriving from Stadio Ferruccio in Seregno, a smaller ground of 2,000 that had housed the club during its climb through the amateur leagues, with a brief spell at Fiorenzuola d'Arda along the way.

The climb itself took most of the club's history. Founded on 20 January 1952 by Ennio di Ponzio, who stayed on as president until 1972, Alcione spent decades in regional football before winning the Eccellenza Lombardia in 2020-21 and the Serie D play-offs the following year. Promotion to Serie C came in 2024, after the club won its Serie D group outright — the first time in its history it had reached a professional division. The name and the crest both come from the kingfisher, Alcedo atthis, which gives the club its colours' logic rather than its identity; the nickname Arancioni refers simply to the orange in its orange-and-blue kit.

That promotion changed what Alcione is to Milan. For a city with two clubs occupying the whole of the football conversation, Alcione has become something like a third option, and its fixture list now includes a derby with Inter's reserve side, Inter U23 — a match already known locally as l'altro derby di Milano, the other Milan derby. There is also a rivalry with Giana Erminio, the Derby Lombardo, and talk among supporters of a future fixture against Milan's own reserve team.

Christian Dimarco, brother of the Internazionale full-back Federico Dimarco, played for the club in the 2024-25 season, one small sign of how far Alcione's profile has travelled from its amateur roots — roots still visible in Sesto San Giovanni, where 3,523 seats are, for now, enough.
