The Bosnia and Herzegovina team goes into the current cycle carrying the weight of a second World Cup finals appearance, having reached the round of 32 in 2026 and gone out 2–0 to the United States. What broke the pattern was the 2022–23 Nations League campaign, where the side won its group in League B and earned promotion.
The federation itself dates back further than the country's current borders suggest, having operated as the Sarajevo football sub-association within Yugoslavia from 1920 before re-forming in 1992 once Bosnia and Herzegovina became independent. FIFA recognition followed in 1996, UEFA's in 1998. The national team had already played its first match by then, away to Albania on 30 November 1995, nine days after the Dayton Peace Agreement was signed.
Home games are played at Bilino Polje in Zenica. The fixtures that still carry an edge are against Serbia and Croatia, rivalries rooted in the Yugoslav wars rather than anything decided on a football pitch.
Džeko's tally for the national side stands at 73 goals from 151 caps.
