Taipei Municipal Stadium seats 20,000, and it is there that Chinese Taipei's women have played their home fixtures since being drawn together as a national side. The gathering itself came first: on 20 January 1975, twenty-four players reported to Taichung Stadium for a month-long training camp, the exercise that produced the team later that year. Out of that camp came a name as well as a squad — "Mulan", after the folk heroine who took her father's place in the army, a story of standing in for someone that suited a side assembled almost from nothing.

The results came quickly. Taiwan's players took the Asian Women's Championship in 1977, in the same year they made their international debut against Indonesia, and defended it in 1980 and 1981, competing under the name Republic of China for the first two of those titles and as Mulan Taipei for the third. A spell affiliated to the Oceania Football Confederation between 1986 and 1989 brought two further titles, in the OFC Women's Championship of both years, before a return to Asian competition and a runner-up finish in the Asian Cup in 1989 and again a decade later, in 1999. Hiroshima in 1994 brought a bronze medal at the Asian Games, the best the team has managed there.

Ting Chi now captains a squad built for a different kind of football than the one that won those early titles, with Hong Kong the opponent most often invoked when the East Asian calendar is discussed, Japan, South Korea and China supplying the sterner tests. The shirt is still blue, the shorts and socks the same, white reserved for the away kit — colours carried since the Taichung camp into a stadium in Taipei that has followed the team through every version of its name.
