East Bengal were assembled in 1920 for the migrants from the east — the Bangals — while Mohun Bagan stood for the Ghotis already settled on the western bank.
The Calcutta Football League tells you how deeply the club sits in the city's ordinary football: 41 titles, the first in 1942, the most recent in 2025.
The night the city keeps returning to is the 1975 IFA Shield final, when East Bengal beat Mohun Bagan 5–0. The derby has also cost the city dearly: sixteen supporters died in a stampede at Eden Gardens in 1980.
Home now is the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan, the Salt Lake ground, with 85,000 seats, though the club's own East Bengal Ground still takes training and the smaller fixtures.
The name most often spoken is Bhaichung Bhutia's. Before him came the Pancha Pandavas, the five who took the treble of 1949 — Ahmed Khan among them.
