El Salvador U20

San Salvador organises its football around Estadio Cuscatlán, and it is there that the under-20 side most often plays when the Federación Salvadoreña de Fútbol needs a stage for its next generation. The team travels under the nickname "La Azulita," a diminutive that sets it apart from the senior "La Selecta" while keeping the same blue and white.

The age-group side dates its international record to a match against Curaçao on 6 March 1962, played in Panama City rather than at home. Two years later it won the CONCACAF Youth Tournament in Guatemala, the competition that would later become the U-20 Championship.

Since then the closest it has come is third place, first in Trinidad and Tobago in 1984, then in Mexico in 2013. The 2013 finish carried weight beyond the medal: it sent El Salvador to the FIFA U-20 World Cup, where the side beat Australia 2–1 in the group stage for its first win at a FIFA tournament. Players from that squad, among them Rolando Morales, went on to the senior national team, continuing a pipeline that has more recently carried through Darwin Cerén.

The 1964 title and the 2013 World Cup run remain the only entries of note in six decades of the competition.
