Five-two against Spain in the final in Kolkata settled it in 2017: Jude Bellingham lifted the FIFA U-17 World Cup as captain.

The Young Lions had beaten Spain once before at that level, 2–1 in the 2010 European final, and four years later took the same title past the Netherlands on penalties after a 1–1 draw.

The side traces itself to 1984, when UEFA set up the Under-16 Championship that preceded the current age-group competition and England finished third in it; a proper full international followed later, a 1–1 draw with Turkey in Livorno in August 1991. Matches and training now run out of St George's Park in Burton upon Trent, on Pitch 6, under the Football Association that has run English football since 1863.
