The team traces to 2003, when the European Championship's youth category dropped from Under-16 to Under-17 and the association reorganised its age-group sides to match. Its first match, on 13 August that year, was a home fixture against China; that same year Finland hosted the FIFA U-17 World Cup and went out in the group stage, finishing twelfth.

For a ground, the side has no fixed home, moving between Myyrmäki Stadium in Vantaa and training spells at the Eerikkilä Sports Institute near Tampere. The European finals have proved harder — Finland reached them nine times under the old U16 format, with a best finish of fourth in 1982, but has not qualified since the age bracket changed in 2002.
