The French federation set up an under-17 side in 1977, though for its first quarter-century the age group went by other names: "cadets," "Juniors B1," "moins de 16 ans." Only in 2001 did the federation settle on "moins de 17 ans," a change of label rather than of eligibility, and that same year the team won the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Trinidad and Tobago.

The squad trains and plays out of Clairefontaine-en-Yvelines, at the national football centre once known as the INF, using the Stade Pierre-Pibarot, which seats 1,500. It has no badge of its own, wearing the Gallic rooster shared across every French national side.

Since that 2001 title, the age group has kept reaching finals without repeating the win: runners-up at the World Cup in Indonesia in 2023, third in Brazil in 2019. In Europe the record runs deeper, with continental titles in 2004, 2015 and 2022. Spain has been the team most often standing in the way — a 2017 World Cup last-16 defeat and a Euro quarter-final loss the same year both went the Spaniards' way.

Karim Benzema was part of the squad that took the 2004 European title, three years before his senior debut.
