Handball at Giresunspor did not exist until 2015, when a section called Giresun Gençlikspor began play under the club's name before folding into the main organisation three years later. The club itself had been running since 1967, and it took only that decade to reach the top flight and, in 2025-2026, the EHF European Cup.

The team plays under whichever sponsor's name sits in front of it — Altınpost or Önallar, depending on the season — and dresses in green and white, with a turquoise kit set for introduction in 2026-2027. Home games run through the Hüseyin Avni Alparslan Spor Salonu, which holds 3,112. Kazım Emre Biçici leads the scoring, and under coach Gökhan Kolukısaoğlu the club has yet to add a senior league or cup title to a cabinet that so far holds only a youth championship, won in 2024.

No senior trophy changes what promotion did for the club. Getting into the Super League opened the door to the EHF European Cup at the first attempt.

What waits closer to home is the Karadeniz Derbisi, the Black Sea derby against Trabzon Büyükşehir Belediyespor and Güneysuspor — matches where the league table means less than the coastline both sides share.
