Gorenje

The old name, RK Šoštanj, held on for another fifteen years before the club took the name ŠRK Velenje, and then, with Slovenian independence and the appliance maker's sponsorship, its current one.

Since the Slovenian league began in 1991, Gorenje has never dropped out of it — a run matched only by Celje. That rivalry, fought between the Šalek and Savinja valleys, is the fixture the town organises its season around; Koper is the other side that regularly gets in the way. The Red Hall itself holds 2,500, but full for the derby.

The championships have come in clusters rather than a steady stream — 2009, then 2012 and 2013 back to back, then a gap until 2021 and 2024 — with three domestic cups and four Supercups filling the years between. The black and yellow kit gave the players their nickname, the Wasps, long before it meant anything to opponents.
