Handball Warszawa Women

Local derbies in Warsaw handball run through the university sport system, and AZS AWF's natural opponents are the city's other academic sides, AZS UW Warszawa and KS Warszawianka.

The club itself grew out of a 1949 decree that turned the Academy of Physical Education from a military institution into a civilian one, and the multi-sport society founded that November, KS AZS-AWF Warszawa, is among the oldest academic sports clubs in the country. The women's handball section won the Polish Championship at 11-a-side in 1953.

Since then the section has settled into a steadier, lower-key existence, playing in the Central League and the First League — the second and third tiers of Polish women's handball — rather than chasing the top flight. Home games are played at Hala Gier AZS AWF on Marymoncka.

The team still measures itself against opponents from outside Warsaw as well, PreZero APR Radom and Suzuki Korona Handball Kielce among the regulars in the Central League, and against other university sides at the national Academic Championships, where it reached the Final Four in 2024. But it is the games against AZS UW and Warszawianka, played in front of the same students who might have chosen either club, that matter most to the people involved.
