Kataller Toyama

The meetings with Zweigen Kanazawa — the Hokuriku Derby — carry the weight of a regional argument that predates either club's professional era. The friction is older still: before 2007 the two corporate sides in Toyama, YKK AP SC and ALO's Hokuriku, played each other as rivals. Then they merged, on 10 September 2007, and became one team.

The name came out of Italian: catalle, roughly "let's go", bolted onto the city. The crest carries a tulip, the prefectural flower. Blue stands for Toyama Bay, white for the snow on the Tateyama range — the shorthand a club reaches for when it has no century of colours to fall back on.

Promotion arrived quickly the first time. Third place in the Japan Football League in 2008, the inaugural season, was enough to move up. The second climb took considerably longer: the J3 title in 2024, under manager Ryo Adachi and with Tsubasa Yoshihira captaining from the front, returned the club to J2. Nine wins in the Toyama Prefectural Football Championship sit alongside it, five of them in the seasons from 2021 onwards.

The Emperor's Cup has never gone further than the third round — 2009, 2011, 2014, 2019, 2023, 2025 — and the J1 and J2 titles remain unwon.

Of everyone to pass through, the name that travelled furthest belongs to Shoya Nakajima, on loan from FC Tokyo in 2014 and later a fixture in the Japan national side. But the player most closely bound to the place is Teruaki Kurobe, a former international who signed in 2010 and stayed on afterwards as assistant manager.
