Naft Maysan

Amarah is the capital of Maysan Province, a region whose economy runs on oil, and the club carrying its name grew directly out of that fact: the Ministry of Oil set it up in 2003 to give the province a side of its own. It plays in claret and sky blue, colours that have stayed fixed through changes of kit supplier, and it carries the nickname "Knights of the Kingdom" in its official dealings.

The club reached the top flight for the first time in the 2009–10 season and finished 17th, then went down again in 2011. Getting back up took two years and came through a runner-up finish in the 2012–13 Iraqi First Division League. Naft Maysan has never gone on to win the top division, the Iraq FA Cup or the Iraqi Super Cup, and the Oil Minister's Cup, a competition built for clubs like it, has brought no wins either.

The one player the club can point to without qualification is Wisam Saadoun, who scored 48 goals for Naft Maysan between 2009 and 2019, still the most by anyone in claret and sky blue, and who topped the Iraqi Premier League's scoring charts in 2017–18 with 24 goals before earning a single cap for Iraq. Off the pitch, stability has been harder to come by: the dugout has changed hands repeatedly.

Home games are played in front of 25,000 at the Maysan Olympic Stadium, and the club shares its origins, if not a fixed rivalry, with other oil-ministry sides such as Naft Al-Wasat.
