Nimes

Nîmes Olympique was formed on 12 April 1937, taking over from Sporting Club Nîmois, which had represented the city since 1901.

The club ran the region through the 1950s, 60s and 70s, winning the Division 2 title in 1950 and reaching three Coupe de France finals — 1958, 1961 and 1996 — without ever lifting the cup. Montpellier's rise through the 1970s and 80s ate into it, and when the two finally met again in Ligue 1 in 2018, it had been twenty-five years since their last meeting in the top flight. Nîmes still leads the head-to-head, eleven wins to seven from twenty-five matches.

Eric Cantona spent the 1991 season at the club before his move to England; Laurent Blanc followed, playing from 1992 to 1993. José Parodi did — he remains the club's all-time scorer in the derby itself, with four goals against Montpellier.

The club left the Stade des Costières, its home for decades, in December 2022, moving into the Stade des Antonins while the new Stade Nemausus is built.
