A planned tie-up with Leipziger FC 07 fell through before it started, so the new women's team began instead in the Landesliga Sachsen, the fourth tier, in 2016.

The Landesliga title came in 2016–17, the Regionalliga Nordost followed in 2019–20 after the pandemic cut that season short and handed them promotion, and the 2. Frauen-Bundesliga was won in 2022–23, taking the club into the Frauen-Bundesliga for the first time.

Big matches now go to the Red Bull Arena, the same ground the men's team fills, while the team trains and plays some fixtures at the Sportanlage Gontardweg. Vanessa Fudalla top-scored in that debut Bundesliga campaign.
