A German immigrant, Johannes Minnemann, put the club together in the port city of Rio Grande. 19 July 1900 is now marked nationally as the Day of Brazilian Football, since the Brazilian Football Confederation recognises Sport Club Rio Grande as the country's oldest football club still playing.

The green, red and yellow of the crest are lifted straight from the flag of Rio Grande do Sul. The club plays out of the Estádio Arthur Lawson, in front of a crowd that tops out around 5,000.

A runners-up finish followed in 1941. Since then the club has settled into the lower tiers of the state championship, winning the Série B in 1962 and the Série C in 2014.

Alcindo started out here in 1963 before he went on to become a Grêmio legend. Locally, the fixtures that matter most are against Sport Club São Paulo, the Rio-Rita derby, and against FBC Riograndense, the Rio-Rio derby — both played out in the same city the club was built in.
