Stal Rzeszów

Stal Rzeszów won the Puchar Polski once. On 1 May 1975, at the Krakovia ground in Kraków, they faced the reserve side of ROW Rybnik and the score stood at 0-0. It went to penalties, where Stal won 3-2, captain Zbigniew Napierała converting one of the kicks under Joachim Krajczy's management. In the Cup Winners' Cup, Stal put out Norway's Skeid home and away, 4-1 and 4-0, before Wrexham ended the run in the last sixteen.

The club traces back to November 1944, formed by workers at the state aviation plants in Rzeszów and known first as OM TUR PZL Rzeszów. The Stal name settled in from May 1949, after a spell as a metalworkers' sports association, and stuck through the decades even as sponsors' names came and went in the 2000s. A spell in the Ekstraklasa followed the postwar years — eleven seasons there, mostly an unbroken run from 1962 to 1972, with a seventh-place finish in 1965/66 standing as the club's best league placing before relegation and, later, a return for one more season in 1975/76.

Rzeszów gives the club two derbies that matter more than most fixtures on the calendar: against Resovia across the city, and against Stal Mielec from elsewhere in Podkarpacie. Home games are played in white, away in blue, at the Stadion Miejski „Stal", which holds 11,547.

No one at the club is spoken of quite like Jan Domarski. He played 205 matches and scored 55 goals in Stal colours, went to the 1974 World Cup with Poland, and scored the goal at Wembley that is still recalled whenever his name comes up in Rzeszów.
