Match nights at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei belong first to the men's team, but Union Berlin's women share the ground, and the arrangement has started to pay off: in the 2024/25 season, home crowds averaged over 5,500, and the promotion decider against Borussia Mönchengladbach on 27 April 2025, won 6–1, set a club attendance record for the women's game.

The department traces back to 22 September 1969, when female students at the club received their first training kit from the men's side, coached early on by Bernd Müller and Bernd Vogel. Relegations, money trouble, and a licence refusal in 2009 pushed the team back down to regional football. The turn came in November 2022, when the club announced it would professionalise the women's set-up; by June 2023 every player held a professional contract.

Head coach Ailien Poese took over that same season and the team has barely paused since. The 2. Frauen-Bundesliga followed a year later. Lisa Heiseler , captain and a one-club player since 2012, top-scored in that promotion season with 22 goals — the kind of figure a squad builds itself around.
