Wythenshawe Amateurs

Boxing Day 2018 drew the biggest crowd Hollyhedge Park had seen for an amateur fixture: 583 people packed in for the first meeting between Wythenshawe Amateurs and Wythenshawe Town F.C. in the North West Counties Football League, and the Amateurs won it 1-0. The Wythenshawe Derby has carried an edge ever since.

The club started in 1946 as Reg Gauntlet's Wythenshawe Lads Club, a youth side at Cleveland Playing Fields, and only turned into an adult team and took the Amateurs name in 1949. Grounds came and went after that — Wythenshawe Park, Christie Playing Fields, a Lads' Clubs ground in Chorlton, then seventeen years sharing Longley Lane with the cricket club — before Hollyhedge Park opened in September 2017 on the back of Football Foundation funding. It holds 1,500 now, home to a side still known to everyone as The Ammies, out in blue and white stripes.

Trophies came steadily rather than in a rush: the Lancashire Amateur Cup three times, the Gilgryst Cup seven times, and the Manchester League Premier Division twice around 1990.
