Zenit-Penza

Penza is a city that keeps its football close to the ground floor: a factory circle formed in 1918, when the club still went by the name Klub Lyubitelei Sporta. The years that followed read like a list of the workshops and works it passed through — Zavod No. 50, ZIF, Traktor, Spartak, Sura, Granit among them.

The club's finances have rarely matched its endurance. Exclusion from the Professional Football League hit twice, in 1999 and again in 2008, and Zenit-Penza withdrew from competition altogether in 2017/18 before working its way back to professional status in 2020. Against that backdrop, the honours it does hold sit mostly in the amateur ranks.

Matches against Spartak-Tambov carry the label of Derby Day, while the fixture with Dorozhnik of Kamenka is known locally as the Sura Derby — a reminder that the club's rivalries are drawn from the region rather than the capital. One name travels further than the rest: German Onugkha wore the shirt in 2017–2018 before his career took him to Krasnodar, Copenhagen and the Russian national team, a departure still mentioned when the club's alumni come up.

Maksim Igoshin now has charge of a squad playing in the Second League, Division B, at the Zenit Stadium, where a capacity in the hundreds keeps the club's ambitions to a scale the city itself would recognise.
