Zhetysu

Rivalries in Kazakhstan's top flight tend to run through the capital and Almaty, but Zhetysu's most bitter meetings have come against clubs from the country's south-east, teams it has traded places with between the Premier League and the First Division for two decades. The club has spent 20 of the 24 seasons since Kazakhstan's independence in the top tier, dropping down and clawing back up often enough that promotion has become part of its identity as much as any single result on the pitch.

Taldykorgan's club traces back to 1981, well before it lined up in the country's first championship in 1992. The heaviest ceiling it has hit came in 2011, when it finished second in the Premier League, its only medal at that level. Everything else of note has come from the layer below: Zhetysu won the First Division in 2006 and again in 2017, the second title arriving straight after relegation and setting up an immediate return to the top flight the following year. A bronze in the First Division followed in 2022.

Omari Tetradze took charge in 2013 and 2014, a stretch remembered less for results than for keeping the club in the Premier League while money around it was tight. Kairat Nurdauletov, once capped for the national side as a player, has run the team since 2024.

Europe visited twice and left twice unimpressed: the 2008 Intertoto Cup ended in a heavy defeat to Hungary's Honvéd, and the 2012/13 Europa League campaign closed with a draw and a loss to Poland's Lech Poznań.

Home games are played at the Zhetysu Stadium, still known to some by its old name, Spartak, in front of a ground that holds 5,550. Yellow shirts, blue on the road — a modest arena in Taldykorgan that has watched the club go up and down the divisions more often than it has watched it win anything.
