The ground is not a temple of football, nor is it a cathedral of ice. It is a box of concrete and lights in a town that does not need to shout to be heard. The building sits on Ul. Tina Ujevića 1, tucked away where the Adriatic wind moves through the streets. Outside, the pavement is worn, a quiet counterpoint to the noise that happens inside.

Dom športova is a multi-purpose hall, which is to say it is a hall that does something different every day. In the morning, it might be empty; by evening, it is full of people playing basketball or handball. The capacity is 1,600, a number that fits the town. It is not a stadium for the masses, but it is a home for those who live here. The club KK Ploče plays its games here, and so does the local handball team.

It is easy to confuse this place with the one in Zagreb. The name is the same, but the feeling is different. The Zagreb arena was built in 1972, a monument to a time when the country was different. The sources do not agree on who built it or when it opened. What is found is the municipal company "Komunalno održavanje" that looks after it, keeping the lights on and the roof dry.

Inside, the stands are close to the action. The ceiling is high, but the sound does not escape. The main business is sport. The players pick up a ball and move across the floor. The crowd watches. It is a simple thing, but it works.

There are no grand entrances or marble stairs. The doors are metal, and the steps lead up to the entrance without ceremony. The building is functional, and that is enough.
