Forsyth Barr Stadium
Dunedin, New Zealand
Formerly: New Carisbrook, Dunedin Stadium, Awatea Street Stadium, Otago Stadium
Forsyth Barr Stadium replaced the old ground on Awatea Street, which had been known by several names over the years. The new arena opened to replace the old one after the earthquake, and it has hosted everything from rugby internationals to football matches. The roof allows light through, but the wind that comes off the harbour can get inside and make the game difficult. The pitch is a hybrid surface, designed to last through the heavy use of a multi-purpose venue. It has seen finals and World Cup games, but mostly it hosts local rugby on weekends. The Highlanders play here, and they have played better games on this surface than on the old grass. The capacity is fixed, and the stands close in tight around the field, so the noise stays inside. It is not a pretty ground, but it does the job.
