Messe Chemnitz

The Messe Chemnitz Arena sits inside a structure that was originally constructed in 1959 as a production facility for aircraft engines before being repurposed into an exhibition centre. The conversion cost around 30 million Euros and the venue was opened in 2003. It is part of the wider Messe Chemnitz complex and is distinct from the outdoor Stadion an der Gellertstraße, which hosts the local football team.

Inside, the space is defined by its scale. The basketball club Niners Chemnitz moved into the arena for the 2019/2020 season, upgrading from the Richard-Hartmann-Halle where they had played since 2002. The capacity for basketball events is set at 5,200 seats. The first major exhibition held there was INTEC 2003 in February 2003, shortly after the doors opened to the public.

The venue is not a football stadium, which clarifies its primary function as a multi-purpose hall for conventions and indoor sports.
