MTN Omondi Stadium

The stadium opened in 1957 as the Lugogo Cricket Oval before evolving into a football ground, and though it is now called MTN Omondi Stadium, the bones of the place retain the weight of its long history in Kampala. The pitch itself is a jarring change of scene for a venue this old; it is artificial turf, laid down under a FIFA Goal Project, and it gives the field a uniform, flat green that contrasts sharply with the crumbling concrete around it. MTN branding dominates the advertising hoardings, a reminder of the sponsorship that secured the name in 2020, though the stands tell a different story.

What makes the atmosphere here distinct is not the capacity, which is often debated, but the physical setting of the game. When the floodlights come on for a night match, the view through the goal net is framed by the dark, unfinished skeleton of the upper tier. You can see the VIP wing rising in the distance, a modern addition funded by the government that sits awkwardly against the old concrete. The stands are close to the touchline, and the sight of players battling for possession on the synthetic surface, with the unfinished concrete looming above, creates a sense of a ground in true transition. It is the primary home for KCCA FC, but you will also find NEC FC and Proline FC sharing the space, all playing out their seasons on this patch of green while the construction continues around them. The unfinished timber and metal beams overhead suggest that the final form of the stadium is still a moving target.
