The Olympiastadion Built to replace the Grunewaldstadion for an Olympics that never happened, it opened in 1936 with a capacity that once stretched to a hundred thousand. The stadium has been the home of Hertha Berlin since 1963.
The ground changed shape again in the early 2000s. A major renovation led by gmp Architekten added a lightweight steel and glass-fibre membrane roof. The work cost nearly €300 million and prepared the venue for the 2006 FIFA World Cup, where it hosted the final between Italy and France. It recently held the UEFA Euro 2024 final between Spain and England.
Inside the bowl the surface is hybrid grass, installed to withstand the demands of American football matches while maintaining quality for soccer. The stadium has never carried a commercial sponsor name, and its address remains Olympischer Platz 3 in the Westend district of Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf.
The attendance record for a football match sits at 88,075, set in 1969 during a Hertha Berlin versus 1. FC Köln fixture. The DFB-Pokal Final has been played annually since 1985. The stadium also hosted the 2015 UEFA Champions League final, when Barcelona beat Juventus 3–1, and the 2011 Women’s World Cup final.
