Sportanlage Carolinum
Ansbach, Germany
Most grounds in Bavaria are built for football, but the Sportanlage Carolinum in Ansbach is designed for a different game. It is the home of the American football club Ansbach Grizzlies. The field is an island of natural grass at the Xaver-Bertsch-Sportpark complex.
The main stand is a concrete structure that dates from 1992. It is modest in scale, holding 1,000 seated supporters with another 4,000 available on the terraces. There is no athletics track; the space is dedicated entirely to the playing surface and the viewing area. The club, founded in 1979, has spent decades competing in the top flight of American football in Germany.
The wider complex includes a B-field for training and a separate artificial turf pitch that was renovated recently. The ground is located at Am Stadion 3, just outside the historic town centre. It is a functional venue, built for the specific requirements of the sport played there, rather than for general-purpose crowds.
Ansbach Grizzlies have not won a title since the 1980s, but the ground remains the centre of their operations. The capacity is 5,000, a figure that reflects the local interest rather than the grandeur of a national stadium. The stadium is their primary base for training and matches.
