Sporthal Hellas

The Sporthal Hellas is a multi-purpose sports hall located at Laan van Poot 353-A, 2566 DA The Hague (Den Haag), in the Loosduinen district of the Netherlands. The facility was designed by architect Jan Brouwer and built by the Stichting Sporthal Hellas (SSH), a foundation established in 1982 by the handball club HV Hellas and the athletics club Haag Atletiek. It was opened in 1983, with official use beginning on November 25, 1983, replacing previous venues such as the Houtrusthallen and Voorburgse Vliegermolen. The hall features a point-elastic synthetic sports floor (Descol 2000 / Pulastic, 7+2 mm thick) suitable for handball, volleyball, basketball, badminton, and tennis. It also includes outdoor artificial grass fields and padel courts. The primary tenant is HV Hellas, a top-level Dutch handball club whose men's team plays in the Eredivisie and women's team in the Hoofdklasse; the women's team is a nine-time national champion. The venue also hosts freerunning, karate (with a dojo in the converted lounge), and the local Haagse Handbal Dagen tournament. The official capacity is 1,400, though some general lists cite 1,200; the hall has 40-meter retractable stands on both long sides providing 700 seats. The venue has not undergone major structural rebuilds or name changes since opening, though maintenance issues such as roof leaks and ventilation problems were identified by 2020. No official attendance record for a match at Sporthal Hellas was found, although historical matches by the club at other venues drew larger crowds. The hall is not known for hosting major finals or concerts.
