Stade Modibo Keïta

Built through a Soviet-Malian cooperation project and opened in 1967, the stadium has seen the city age around it. It was renamed Stade Modibo Keïta in 1987, honoring the country's first president. The place is not merely a football ground; it holds an Olympic swimming pool within its complex, a detail that suggests it was built to host multiple events.

The stadium found its moment in 2002 when it hosted the African Cup of Nations. The arena was rehabilitated for the tournament, and the crowd filled the concrete tiers, watching Senegal reach the semifinals. That era left a mark on the place, setting the attendance record at 25,000 for the quarterfinal against DR Congo. Since then, the ground has hosted concerts and, more painfully, a stampede during the Maouloud festival in 2011. The structure is currently undergoing further renovations to bring it up to standard.
