Stadium Taranaki

Rugby Park opened in April 1947, when the town needed a proper venue for the sport that defined the region. The current structure followed in August 1972.

Its identity shifted with commerce. Yarrows the Bakers acquired the naming rights in 2002, and the stadium carried their brand for more than twenty years. In March 2025, that arrangement concluded. The venue reverted to Stadium Taranaki.

The 2011 Rugby World Cup brought international matches to the grounds. The attendance record, however, belongs to an older era. A test match against France in 1961 drew 36,000 spectators.

Earthquake engineering reshaped the stands. The East Stand, demolished and reconstructed by Clelands Construction, brought the venue to its current capacity of 25,000. The Chiefs have been the primary tenants since 2013, and the Taranaki Bulls remain fixtures in the domestic season.

The surface uses a GrassMaster hybrid system, natural grass interwoven with artificial fibres. The stadium has hosted cricket finals and concerts, but its primary purpose remains rugby.
