The ground opened in 1965 and was originally called Stadiumi Lokomotiva before being renamed in 1991 after Niko Dovana, a former goalkeeper and financier for KF Teuta Durrës. It is owned by the Durrës Municipality and operated by the club, and it is the fifth-largest stadium in Albania with a capacity of 12,040 spectators.
A renovation took place in 2017, widely cited in the context of Albania's qualification for the UEFA European Championship, as the stadium was used for home matches during the qualifying campaign. A notable match there was a 2-0 win against Malta in 2014, though an earlier 1-0 win against Uzbekistan in 2010 also drew attention, with an attendance of 8,000 recorded for that friendly.
