About the player
When Sunderland lost the 2019 League One play-off final to Charlton Athletic, George Honeyman was the man wearing the armband. It was the second Wembley defeat of that spring: he had also captained the side in the EFL Trophy final, lost to Portsmouth.
The captaincy came to him from within. Honeyman joined Sunderland's academy aged 10 and made his senior debut in February 2015. In August 2018 he was named club captain, the first academy graduate to hold the role since Michael Gray.
He left in August 2019 for Hull City, who paid a reported £400,000. His best season came in 2020–21, when Hull won the League One title. Honeyman took the club's Player of the Year award, as well as the Players' Player of the Year and Supporters' Player of the Year awards. He was also named in both the PFA Team of the Year and the EFL League One Team of the Season for that campaign.
In June 2022 he moved to Millwall for an undisclosed fee. Over the next three years he made 109 appearances and scored three goals. A significant hamstring injury in 2023–24 kept him out for seven months. He left the club in 2025, and now plays for Blackpool.
Honeyman, a right-footed midfielder from Prudhoe, has not won a senior cap for England.
