About the player
Soma Novothny left Veszprém for Napoli in 2012, after spending his youth years, from 1999 to 2011, at FC Veszprém. At Napoli he was loaned out four times: to Paganese, Mantova, Südtirol and Diósgyőr.
He moved to Sint-Truiden in 2016 and went back to Diósgyőr on loan for a second spell in 2016–17. In 2017 he joined Újpest, and in the 2017–18 season the club won the Magyar Kupa. In 2019 he was sent on loan to Busan IPark in South Korea.
His most notable season came in Germany. Novothny joined VfL Bochum on a free transfer on 7 September 2020, and Bochum won the 2. Bundesliga and gained promotion in 2020–21. He left the club by mutual consent on 3 January 2022 and signed for Anorthosis Famagusta in Cyprus.
He then returned to Hungary with Vasas on a free transfer in 2022, and in 2024 moved to Poland to play for Ruch Chorzów.
On 26 June 2025 he joined Kisvárda on a free transfer from Ruch, signing a contract that runs to 30 June 2027.
Novothny played for Hungary at youth level, from under-16 to under-21, but has not won a senior cap.
