Arenas Getxo

The Estadio Municipal de Gobela seats 1,221, a figure that says plainly where Arenas Club now sits in Spanish football.

Arenas Foot-ball Club took shape on 1 July 1909 and was registered the following year; by 1912 it had fixed on the red-and-black striped shirt and white shorts still worn today. It was among the founders of La Liga in 1928, and finished third in the league's second season, 1929–30 — the high point of a spell in the top flight that ended with relegation in 1936. Everything since has been played out in the lower tiers, with Tercera División titles in the 1940s and 1960 and a Copa Vasca in 1936.

What earned the club its nickname, El Histórico, happened earlier still. In the 1919 Copa del Rey final Arenas beat Barcelona 5–2, and that result, more than any league placing, is why the name has stuck for over a century. Three further final defeats — to Madrid FC, to Barcelona again, and to Real Unión — never carried the same weight.

The club's academy sent several players into the Spain squads that competed at the Olympics in 1920 and 1928, among them Guillermo Gorostiza, and Javier Clemente started his coaching career here before building a reputation elsewhere. Across the estuary, Barakaldo remains the fixture that matters most.

Promotion from Segunda Federación last season put Arenas back in Primera Federación for 2025–26.
