Fencibles United

Howick and Pakuranga sit on Auckland's eastern edge, and it was those two suburbs' clubs, Pakuranga Town AFC and Howick AFC, that merged in 1995 to form Fencibles United. The new name looked further back than either predecessor, to the Royal New Zealand Fencible Corps, the pensioner-soldiers who settled the area as its first European arrivals. Their red tunics, white trim and blue trousers became the club's colours, and the borrowed history stuck: everyone around the ground still calls the team the Fencies.

The ground itself, Riverhills Domain in Pakuranga, holds 500, modest even by local standards, and for years it was hard to point to much beyond that. In 2003 the club reached the last 16 of the Chatham Cup before Central United ended the run, and that stood as its high-water mark for two decades.

Then came a stretch that changed the shape of the club's history. Fencibles United won the NRFL Championship in 2024, and two years later went further still, beating Cashmere Technical 2–1 in the Chatham Cup final at One New Zealand Stadium in Christchurch, with Ronaldo Lopez Munoz and Kodie Nicol scoring the goals. A club that had spent most of its life outside the Round of 16 was suddenly a national cup winner.

Individual careers have passed through Riverhills Domain too. Abby Erceg, later a Football Ferns captain, played for and was named Player of the Year at the club, while academy graduate Nathan Walker moved on from Fencibles to the Wellington Phoenix and then into New Zealand's youth sides, part of the group that won the 2024 OFC Under-19 Championship.

Locally, the club's edge is sharpened against Ellerslie, Eastern Suburbs and Takapuna, fixtures grouped loosely under the East Auckland derby tag, even if the label isn't official everywhere it's used. With Eastern Suburbs specifically, rivalry sits alongside a resource-sharing arrangement, two clubs competing and cooperating within the same patch of the city. Off the back of the Chatham Cup win, Fencibles now carry a target on their back that Howick and Pakuranga's amalgamated club has rarely had to wear before.
