Fernwald

FSV 1926 Fernwald has already stopped existing once. In 1935 the club was dissolved and folded into a Nazi-era sports organisation, and it took until May 1949, with football in Hesse having to rebuild from nothing, for it to re-form. It carried on for decades as FSV Steinbach before taking the name of the wider municipality on 1 July 2007, becoming FSV 1926 Fernwald.

The oddest turn in its recent history came in 2014, when the club walked away from the Hessenliga on its own terms despite finishing tenth, dropping itself down the pyramid rather than staying up. It took five years to climb back into contention: the Verbandsliga Hessen Mitte title in 2018–19 put it back within reach of the fourth tier, and in 2024–25 it went one better, winning the Hessenliga itself, a decade after choosing to leave it.

Fernwald plays in black and white at the Sportplatz Fernwald-Steinbach, a ground that holds 2,500 and sits, as the ties to Steinbach suggest, closer to the identity the club carried for most of its history than the one it has worn since 2007.
