Muri-Gümligen

In 2023 Guillaume Hoarau, the French international striker who had retired from professional football the year before, pulled on a Muri-Gümligen shirt with the number 99. His career had taken in Paris Saint-Germain, Bordeaux and BSC Young Boys. He signed with an amateur side in the Bern suburbs because of a friendship with the club president, Bruno Hunziker.

Muri-Gümligen had been built for a different scale of football. Twenty enthusiasts from Gümligen, a locality in the municipality of Muri bei Bern, started the club on 1 June 1954. It plays on Platz 2 at the Sportzentrum Füllerich, where the capacity is put at between 1,000 and 1,500.

The club's climbs have been modest and hard-earned. It went up to the 2. Liga in June 1985 and again in June 1991, and once more in 2008. In 1993 the team finished first in its league and qualified for the promotion playoffs to the 1. Liga. Recent seasons have been spent between the 2. Liga Interregional, the fifth tier, and the 1. Liga Classic, the fourth.

Riccardo Pileggi has been in charge for a long spell, through 2023–24 at least. He debuted for BSC Young Boys at 16 and was in the squad that won promotion to the top flight in 2001. Someone who knows how a first-team dressing room works now spends his weeks with part-timers.

There is no named derby, but the fixtures that matter come from close by. FC Köniz, FC Ostermundigen and FC Bolligen are neighbours, and the same sides turn up against Muri-Gümligen year after year in the lower leagues.
