Muttenz

SV Muttenz sits in the 1. Liga Classic, the fourth tier of Swiss football, after a season, back in 1977/78, when the group title came with no route upward: a loss to FC Emmen shut the door on the promotion playoffs for Nationalliga B.

That same season carried the club further than any before it in the Swiss Cup. Muttenz beat FC Nordstern, then a Nationalliga B side, 2:1 to reach the Round of 32, where FC Zürich ended the run 4:1 in front of 5,500 spectators, still the ground's record crowd. A second run to that stage came in 2015/16, when FC Basel won 5:1.

Founded on 1 January 1921, the club known as SVM has built its honours around a strictly local prize, the Basler Cup, won four times against opponents from within the Basel area: FC Riehen in 1949 after a replay, SC Binningen in 1973, SC Baudepartement in 1990, and SC Dornach in 2008 after extra time.

Walter Bernhard came up through the youth ranks before moving on to FC Basel, while Roger Schreiber arrived at Muttenz already carrying Basel experience and played two separate spells at the club, from 1996 to 1998 and again from 1999 to 2001.

Derby weekends against FC Black Stars Basel and FC Concordia Basel remain the fixtures local media reach for. Muttenz plays out of the Sportanlage Margelacker, rebuilt into a proper stadium between 1983 and 1986.
