South Africa U23

SASOL began sponsoring the age-group side in 1994, the year the team took shape after South African football's return to international competition: players still answer to Amaglug-glug, a name borrowed from the glug of liquid fuel pouring.

That turnover is the point of the side. There is no fixed squad and no home ground — the Under-23s exist only when a tournament calls them together, drawing on players 23 or under in the given Olympic year, with the finals themselves allowing three over-age additions. It is a team assembled and dissolved on a cycle, built for Olympic qualification, the Africa U-23 Cup of Nations and the African Games rather than for a league table.

The Olympic Games have been reached three times, in Sydney, Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo. The continental record runs shallower but steadier: third place at the Africa U-23 Cup of Nations in 2015 and again in 2019, either side of a run to the final of the 2011 African Games, where South Africa finished with the silver medal. Green and gold, the colours shared with the senior team, Bafana Bafana, are the only constant the age group carries between camps.
