Sandygate

Sandygate is a ground. The first club football match was played here on 26 December 1860, when Hallam F.C. met Sheffield F.C. It was opened in 1804 as a cricket pitch, and the cricket club still shares the turf with the football side. A sign at the entrance carries the claim to be the world’s oldest ground, a title supported by records held by the Guinness Book of Records.

Floodlights were installed in 1992 to allow evening matches. The surface is natural grass, as it has always been.

When Saturday Comes was filmed here in 1996, taking advantage of the setting’s authenticity. The highest attendance recorded was 2,000 in 1925 for an FA Amateur Cup tie against Bishop Auckland, though current figures for capacity remain unclear, with sources citing anything from 700 to 1,300. has stayed put.
