The Meadow

The Meadow sits on Amy Lane in Chesham, Buckinghamshire, and has not changed its name since the club assembled from two local sides in 1917. The ground is basic: terracing remains the main offering for supporters, with only a handful of seats available under cover. That simplicity has kept the place steady through decades when many clubs chased modernisation.

The pitch measures 101 by 64 yards, natural grass that has not been replaced by artificial surfaces. What the place lacks in facilities it makes up for in proximity.

Capacity is recorded at 5,000, though the seated portion is only 284. The remaining 4,716 spots are on terraces, and on the biggest days the ground fills to that limit. A record crowd watched Chesham United host Cambridge United on December 5, 1979, and the number has never been exceeded.

No major renovations have been carried out. The club considered a move in 2018 but decided to stay, reasoning that a basic venue requires less constant investment than a modern arena. The result is a pitch that looks the same today as it did when the first recorded match was played here on December 29, 1917. There are no sponsorship changes to the name, no new stands, and no attempt to hide the age of the place. It is what it was built to be: a football ground in a market town, unchanged by the passage of time.
