About the player
Malick Thiaw was born in Düsseldorf and started out locally at TV Kalkum-Wittlaer before a run through the city's academy system — Fortuna Düsseldorf, Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Mönchengladbach — brought him to Schalke 04, where he made his professional debut on 7 March 2020. Over two seasons at Schalke he made 57 league appearances and scored four goals, living through relegation in 2020–21 and winning promotion straight back to the Bundesliga the following year.
Newcastle United signed Thiaw in August 2025. He reached 37 league appearances and four goals by late in the year, including a brace against Everton in November. With Dan Burn unavailable, he was handed the captain's armband for the opening fixtures of the 2026–27 Premier League season, a mark of the trust he has built in a short time at the club.
At international level, Thiaw made his Germany debut on 16 June 2023 against Poland and has continued to be called up since, taking his caps into double figures.
