About the player
When Mamadou Samassa switched international allegiance in 2012, moving from the French youth setup — where he had played at U18, U19 and U20 level — to Mali, he reached a significant milestone in his career. He got there quickly: at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations he was Mali's starting goalkeeper as the team finished third.
His club education came at Guingamp, where he signed his first professional contract in September 2008 after progressing through the youth ranks. He remained there for nearly a decade, but for much of it played understudy to Stéphane Ruffier, including during the 2013–14 season when Guingamp won the Coupe de France — a medal earned without playing in the final. Appearances at Troyes followed, before a move to Turkey with Sivasspor, with 51 league appearances over two seasons. Stints in Greece with Levadiakos and Malaysia with Sri Pahang were short, the latter yielding 26 appearances before he left at the end of that season.
Since joining Stade Lavallois as a free agent in June 2023, Samassa has established himself as the club's senior goalkeeper, a status confirmed in September 2025 when he agreed a contract extension running to 2028. He has had his share of notable moments in France: he was named Man of the Match after a 1–0 win over Bordeaux in October 2023, and in January 2025 he took a cut requiring stitches during a game against Clermont Foot.
