«Red Sox»
Fenway Park opened in 1912, and the Red Sox won the World Series that same year, beating the New York Giants. The ground seats 37,755, standing room aside.
The team was not yet called the Red Sox when it first won the Series. It began in 1901 as the Boston Americans, one of the American League's eight charter franchises, and beat the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1903 under that name. The change came in 1908, when the owner, John I. Taylor, chose the name Red Sox and made red the club's colour. Navy blue and white sit alongside it, and grey is kept for the road kit.
Titles came quickly after Fenway opened. Victories over the Philadelphia Phillies in 1915, the Brooklyn Robins in 1916 and the Chicago Cubs in 1918 took the club to five in sixteen years. Then nothing for 86 years, a drought that became known as the "Curse of the Bambino". It ended in 2004 against the St. Louis Cardinals.
Once that wait was over, the wins came more often. The Red Sox beat the Colorado Rockies in 2007, met the Cardinals again in 2013 and won, and in 2018 beat the Los Angeles Dodgers. That made four titles in fourteen years, after none in the previous eighty-six.
The club has reached thirteen World Series and won nine of them.
