Blue Storm Stadium
Biddeford, United States
Formerly: Big Blue Turf
There is a patch of ground in Biddeford that catches the eye for the wrong reasons. The Blue Storm Stadium sits at 11 Hills Beach Road, but it is the colour that forces a double-take. The playing surface is a deep, electric blue, a shade so specific that the University of New England had to secure special permission from Boise State University to lay it down.
The facility arrived in 2018, replacing the old Big Blue Turf that had served the campus for nearly a decade. The capacity is modest, holding 1,600 spectators in a setting that feels more intimate than a professional arena. There are no luxury suites or expansive concourses; the crowd is close to the action, watching the game unfold on a surface that changes the perception of the sport entirely.
The stadium is a multipurpose venue, hosting football, soccer, softball, and rugby, but the football games draw the most attention. to serve the university’s athletic needs rather than to impress. The ASBA Facility of Merit Award suggests the construction quality is sound, but the enduring legacy of the site will likely be remembered for the colour of its grass.
