The wooden structure was closed and its roof stripped away after the 1985 Brodford City fire, when officials judged the old seating a fire risk. The club offices and dressing rooms at the base remained, and the rest of the ground carried on.

What the stand shows now is a patchwork of colour rather than a single matching set.

The ground was laid out in 1937 with help from the local council. Embankments were turned into terraces in the 1950s, and the eastern side was roofed the following decade. A rugby league club shared the site immediately after World War Two until 1956, but the football club has occupied the pitch ever since. The highest attendance is still talked about: 21,000 for an FA Cup third-round tie against Manchester United on 4 January 1958. The visitors won 3–1.

The club plays its home fixtures here until a new venue is ready. The plan is to replace the existing site with the Cumberland Sports Village, a shared ground for the football and rugby league sides, but the current location remains in use while construction takes place.
