Clarence T. C. C. Ching Athletics Complex
Honolulu, United States
Formerly: Cooke Field, Clarence T.C. Ching Field
The ground opened in 2015, though it was not ready for football until 2021. The capacity is now 15,194. That number was reached last December when the Hawaii Bowl was played here. The crowd stayed until the final whistle, and the visitors from California were beaten 35-31. The pitch is covered in artificial grass, which has been smoothed out by the track and field athletes who train on it every morning before the sun gets too high.
There are large advertising boards running around the middle of the stadium, showing local banks and credit unions. The seats are numbered with letters and numbers, and the concrete underneath is grey and worn. A small vehicle sits parked near the bottom of the stands, waiting for the staff to move it. The roof does not cover the whole ground, so the weather is always part of the game. When it rains, the water runs off the plastic seats and pools in the concrete channels. When the wind blows, it comes straight from the ocean and pushes the ball sideways. The players have to learn to control it, or they lose possession.
