Ebbets Field
Brooklyn, United States
Ebbets Field sat like a brick corner at the meeting of Bedford Avenue and Montgomery Street, tucked into the Flatbush district of Brooklyn. Where other grounds were spread out, this one was cramped, built tight against the city grid so that the outfield walls felt close enough to touch. The structure was not smooth; it was heavy and angular, with brick arches and tall windows that gave it the look of a warehouse rather than a sports arena.
A photograph taken from the perimeter shows the scale of the problem: hundreds of cars parked in rows on the dirt lot outside the gates, waiting for the game to start. The crowd did not travel to make up the numbers; they walked out of Brooklyn to get there. Inside, the stands were not uniform. The bleachers added in 1926 sat high and open to the elements, while the covered sections below offered shelter but little view of the sky.
The ground held the Brooklyn Dodgers for decades, but it never tried to be something it was not. It was small, old-fashioned, and stubborn. When the team finally left for Los Angeles in 1957, the ground felt the loss immediately. The owner sold the site to a developer, and the demolition crews arrived in 1960 to clear the bricks. They tore it down piece by piece, leaving nothing but an empty plot of land where the apartments would eventually go. The stadium was gone before its fans could look back and call it a legend.
